The Wind Energy Challenge
Net-Metering Offset
The idea of net-metering is to allow the electric meters of customers with generating facilities to turn backwards when producing more energy than the customers demand. Net-metering allows customers to offset their costs throughout the billing period, not
just at the time the electricity is produced.
Net-metering programs vary by state and by utility company. Net excess generation (NEG) may be carried on a monthly basis, or it may be credited for up to a year. Annual NEG credits allow wind turbine owners to use energy produced in the winter, when weather tends to be windier, to displace the costs of large summer loads needed for air-conditioning or pumping water for irrigation.
